Take your business from good to great through strong leadership principles.
“Great leaders don’t tell you what to do; they show you how it’s done.”
As a business leader, you’ve got a lot of eyes on you. Your employees, your superiors, your colleagues: everyone is assessing your commitment and savvy. Your professional (and possibly personal) reputation is at stake. Feels like a lot, right?
Becoming a great leader isn’t hard to figure out, but it does take a lot of work. It takes energy, passion, and perseverance to steer the ship day in and day out. So what matters most? What does great leadership look like?
The commonality between great leaders can often be found through the following four qualities...
Vision
Create a clear vision for your team. Know where you are going and why, and make sure your goals are prioritized. Be willing to flex with the inevitable curve balls life throws your way, but reinforce the company vision with your people on a regular basis.
Remember, too, that sometimes visions change. As you grow, you may find different priorities emerge. Allow your vision to grow and change, and keep your team inspired.
Assertiveness
Be a leader who is bold and decisive. Know that sometimes your decisions will backfire, but you’ll recover. People respect leaders who aren’t afraid of making tough calls; they know the buck stops with you and you’ll have their back when need be.
Don’t be afraid to collaborate with others as well. Part of being a good leader is asking for help when you need it. Being assertive about what is best for you and your company saves everyone valuable time, energy, and money.
Passion & Perseverance
It can be hard, advancing the ball one small step at a time. That’s why re-engaging with your passion regularly is a crucial part of leading well. Your employees won’t (and shouldn’t) care more than you do; they’re taking their cues from you. This is where having a group of like-minded entrepreneurs or professionals in your circle can be beneficial. There’s nothing like “talking shop” with other business owners to get you pumped again. Your team will notice (for better or worse) whether you’re energized or deflated. Make sure you’re able to tap back into the reason why you started in the first place.
Perseverance is another part of the mix that cannot be ignored. Some days, you’re just putting your head down and moving forward. Your leadership in these moments (and they always come) is what makes or breaks your image. Be a leader who is consistent.
Integrity
“If you do good business, it’s good for business.” Having integrity has become so important in professional spheres that it is now a non-negotiable (here’s a great article from FastCompany on integrity-based business). In fact, it may be the most important area of leadership. People want to work for companies that respect them and treat them well, and that all starts from a foundation of integrity. Treat your clients well, treat your people well, and do good work. Look for opportunities to go above and beyond, and set a high standard for yourself and others. If you’re an owner it may feel like you answer to no one, but it’s not true: you answer to your clients and your employees. Let that serve to keep you accountable and above-board in all you do with your business.
Your effective and skilled leadership will not only benefit your company, but yourself and your team on a personal level as well. Create an environment where strengths are recognized, individual talents are noticed, and your leadership brings forth the leader in those around you.
